If menstruation begins while a woman is in the state of fasting, even if it starts a few moments before sunset, the fast is considered invalidated. In this case, Qaza (making up for the missed fast) becomes obligatory. After the fast is broken, it is permissible for the woman to eat and drink, but it is recommended to avoid openly doing so out of respect for the blessed month of Ramadan.

If menstruation starts before sunset, the fast is void, and Qada(make-up fasting) is required. However, if menstruation begins after sunset, the fast is valid and complete, and no Qaza is needed.
